Serviceware Performance

Founded in 1992 and based near Stuttgart, Germany, cubus (a Serviceware company) currently has approximately 35-40 employees and claims to have more than 400 companies using its software. In 2019, cubus was acquired by Serviceware, one of the leading providers of software solutions for the digitalization and automation of service processes (Enterprise Service Management), enabling companies to increase service quality and efficiently manage service costs.

Serviceware Performance (formerly known as cubus outperform) is a software tool for planning, analyzing and monitoring business financial performance. It is an integrated CPM solution with functionality for planning, simulation, project portfolio management and strategy implementation. Aimed at business power users, Serviceware Performance has a web-based user interface resembling Excel as well as a Microsoft Windows based desktop app.

Serviceware Performance provides a flexible platform for building individual, complex business logic for CPM and planning applications. The solution has no specific market or industry focus and is used by companies of various sizes and industries. Serviceware Performance, however, does have predefined business content, data models and logic for integrated profit and financial planning (balance sheet, P&L, cash flow), revenue and sales planning, HR planning, cost center planning, cost allocations, investment planning and project portfolio management. Customers can completely adapt and extend the models and logic to meet their specific requirements. Following initial implementation, business power users can develop Serviceware Performance applications in a self-service manner without specific programming skills. For web based OPAL analysis, ad-hoc reports and data visualization Serviceware Performance AL (formerly cubus EV Analytics) offers an integrated module solution which enlarges the functionality. Serviceware Performance AL can be used as an integrated modular solution or as well as a standalone product.

Serviceware Performance uses multidimensional (Oracle Essbase, IBM TM1 or Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services) and relational databases (Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server) for data storage. The largest implementations in terms of concurrent users run on Oracle Essbase, but the majority of customers use Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. IBM TM1 has a huge installed customer base worldwide which allows a steadily growth in this segment.  Furthermore, the vendor provides integration with Oracle Analytics Server and Oracle Analytics Cloud for customers with extended dashboarding and formatted reporting needs. Using APIs it is possible to easily connect to other solutions (e.g PowerBI and Insight Software – formerly CXO).

User & Use Cases

Besides planning, customers mainly use Serviceware Performance for ad hoc query and reporting (83 percent), basic data analysis (68 percent), standard/enterprise reporting (67 percent) or within financial consolidation processes (57 percent). 45 percent of respondents plan to use it for advanced analysis and 44 percent for dashboards/scorecards in the future. Serviceware Performance targets mid-sized and large companies across all industries. 55 percent of our sample of Serviceware Performance customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 employees) with a median of 100 users (including 50 using planning functionality), but the mean of 168 users (98 for planning) indicates there are also several larger implementations. 74 percent of Serviceware Performance users are planning users – significantly above the survey average of 65 percent – reflecting the fact that Serviceware Performance is essentially a planning and budgeting tool rather than an analytics tool.
