Collibra DI Cloud
Founded in 2008 as a spin-off of Vrije University Brussels, Collibra’s headquarters are today in Brussels and New York City. It is one of the big players in the data governance market. With around 1,100 employees, Collibra has good geographical coverage with 12 offices worldwide and operations in 25 countries. Its 560+ customers come from a wide variety of industries and the software is used in multiple verticals such as financial services, retail, healthcare, manufacturing and others. Collibra’s partner program includes implementation, technology, cloud and channel partners (currently 240 partners). The vendor also provides educational services (Collibra University, training and certification program) and coaching. In the future, Collibra intends to enhance its partner program and tools for partners, as well as provide more training content via Collibra University with the purpose of educating customers in data intelligence.
Collibra follows a new approach by focusing on the federated computational data governance ca-pabilities of a data mesh, in contrast to a monolithic centralized data governance strategy. For this, Collibra provides a comprehensive set of integrated cloud services in the Collibra Data Intelligence Cloud, including different capabilities for data cataloging, data governance, data quality and observability, data lineage and data privacy as well as core services and APIs. Metadata integration is supported by more than 45 different data sources via certified JDBC drivers, direct custom integrations and API-driven solutions to build a central point of data knowledge. AI/ML technology is utilized to simplify the process of metadata integration, preparation, linkage and usage.
The tool is mainly about serving the business users and data stewards leveraging business and technical metadata. Its origins and expertise in data governance still stand out, for example, in the form of comprehensive workflow and user management, and policy management. The platform now supports data observability (the monitoring of data and system health), which helps customers to validate data quality along cross-system data pipelines leveraging governance and operational metadata.
The repository, user and workflows are extendable to fit into various use case scenarios. All in all, Collibra provides a rich set of functionality to curate and access metadata, but it is also complex to learn, configure and manage according to users.
User & Use Cases
Almost all of the companies surveyed use Collibra Data Intelligence Cloud as a data governance solution (96 percent). 70 percent use it for data stewardship / data quality management and 41 percent as a data lake. This is a bit surprising, as a data catalog does not store data, but mainly metadata. The same applies for data warehousing / BI (37 percent) and data storage / data provisioning (19 percent). Contrary to our expectations last year, data discovery usage has not increased on the back of the acquisition of owlDQ. It has actually fallen by 17 percentage points. Perhaps integration work is still in progress.
Collibra is used by a median of 300 users, which is four times the average in the Data Intelligence Platforms peer group and six times the average in the Data Governance Products peer group. The fact that nearly 90 percent of its customers are from large companies suggests that the tool is used predominantly by data experts. The mean of 734 users shows that higher numbers can also be served. The average of 65 developers per implementation is very high in relation to the mean of 734 users.
