Having laid out the analytical formats companies currently have in place, we now turn to the aspects of analytical landscapes that require attention in order to deliver the information needed to enable sustainable success.

The most important problem currently appears to be the time needed to adapt to changes in requirements coming from either the evolution of businesses over time or from changes in source systems. Nearly half of all respondents report massive shortcomings when it comes to reacting to changes (48 percent).

Another 43 percent “somewhat agree” they need to be more agile. While the lack of agility mostly concerns the data delivery back end, the number of people that report issues with communicating insights from data (i.e., the front end) is equally high. One way to address these needs is to complement widely used analytical formats with more context, thus making them easier for recipients to digest. Explaining the meaning of patterns and proposing concrete measures are in the realm of data storytelling. But storytelling also needs to be supported by a flexible back end to facilitate the inclusion of external data to enhance data stories.
