SAP Lumira (Designer)

SAP Lumira 2.0 is a recently introduced product focused on dashboard/BI application creation and data discovery. Lumira contains two modules: Designer and Discovery. Designer is the former Design Studio, which is a development environment for creating custom BI/dashboard and analysis applications targeted at tech-savvy users. Discovery is a redesigned former Lumira 1.x solution and focuses on data discovery and dashboard creation for business users.

SAP was founded in 1972 by five former IBM employees but really came into prominence in the 1990s with the ERP boom. The vendor employs over 87,000 people worldwide and has a turnover of over €22bn. It is one of the largest business software vendors in the world.

Today, SAP follows a dual analytics strategy aimed at delivering continued innovations for on-premises solutions while building new cloud solutions. This product review focuses on SAP Lumira 2.0.

SAP Lumira is deployed as part of the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform. Both the Lumira components (Designer and Discovery) share a common Server Add-On which is installed on the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform. Designer and Discovery are both installed full clients and both load queried data into integrated in-memory storage.

SAP Lumira Discovery is a data discovery module targeted at business users. The product offers capabilities for data preparation to help business analysts to bring their data into a format suitable for analysis. Users are able to load data from various data sources and prepare them using functions such as merge, rename, duplicate and others.

User & Use Cases

Like BW, SAP Lumira Designer is mostly used in large scenarios within large companies.

Designer was originally built as a native front-end product for SAP BW and SAP HANA systems. SAP BW systems are often used as central data warehouse deployments in large and mid-sized companies so Designer is used in those scenarios.

Although the product is mostly used for dashboards and enterprise reporting, its 7 percent penetration rate across the whole enterprise is well below average.

On the customer side, we often see Designer being tested in smaller, specific dashboarding and reporting use cases rather than being deployed as the central enterprise reporting solution.
